VENHORST KIWI CULTURES
History
Venhorst Kiwi Cultures is specialized in cultivating kiwi plants for 25 years up to now. After an intensive test phase and various experiments the cultivation of kiwi plants was started in larger style in 1984. In the beginning it were mostly the sorts "Hayward" (female) & "Atlas" (male), which were cultivated in a 12cm pots. For better distinction the male and female plants were cultivated in different coloured pots. In gardencenters you had the choice to buy several female plants and pollinate them with only one male plant. For the commerce in supermarkets & florists a carrier bag made of synthetic material was developed in which both plants were elegantly packed up. On the backside an easy understanding tutorial for planting & tending was printed. In the beginning, this version was preferably offered in German speaking areas.
But then, in the year 1986, an unsusual discovery was made. One plant under the Haywards contained clear differences compared with the other plants. This plant was because of this conspicuousness broutht to a test laboratory and multiplied though tissue culture. Then it was planted in different locations. After 3 years the sensationel suspicion of the cultivators was confirmed. This kiwi was against all others a self-pollination-plant. In the blossom were female components as well as male components located. The plants were already in the forst year full of fruits, the fruits were smaller than the normal ones of the Hayward kind, but the amout of fruits per plant was enormous. This self-pollination-plant get the name from the youngest daugther "JENNY".
The biological sensation was perfect and the Actindia deliciosa „JENNY“ was born.
Patents were proposed world-wide. A new packing was invented, because there was only one plant left wich had to be packed. It started with a simple packing made of plastic which was followed by a PET packing. Because of the environmental protection regulations, which became more important, a new, environmentally friendly carton cover was developed.
The kiwi "Jenny" is exported in 23 countries of the world by now.
Cultivation The raw material für multiplying is still coming from our own motherplant. So the purity of the plant is saved. In the race of Actinidia deliciosa, "Jenny" is the only pure self-pollinator. With tissue culture we thin out our plants in our factory in France. When the plants put down their roots, a big part of them is brought to the netherlands. Here the plants are repotted and further cultivated until they are salable. Plants for France, Spain & Portugal are repotted in out factory in France and cultivated further until they reach marketability. From our Products in France, clients are supplied with plants for commercial cultivation in Kiwi plantations.
